FAQ - Customs and border protection officer salary

How quickly would the government shutdown end if CBP (Customs and Border Protection) and TSA officers refused to work?
Well, if history is any indication ..There was a time when the Air Traffic Controllers said, u201cLetu2019s just donu2019t go to work. They canu2019t fire all of us!u201dAre you old enough to know the end of that story?Over 10K of them got fired. The airports had to close for one day, but the next day, supervisors and other people showed up under the contingency planu2026.and a lot of people who had been waiting for Air Traffic Controller jobs got one.Oh.. another thing that I didnu2019t know and just learned todayu2026..Those Air Traffic Controllers who refused to come to work? They were banned for life and cannot be re-hired.So, I donu2019t see how that would have any influence on the length of the government shut down. it does not end because people donu2019t come to work. it ends when a budget gets passed. It started when a budget did not get passed by a certain date and it ends when a budget DOES get passed.
How do I get access to public bill of lading databases from Customs and Border Protection?
As stated in the previous answer, this information is not available to the general public.u00a0 Here is what CBP says:How can I get information about who is importing or exporting various commodities?Importer names on entry documents are confidential and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) does not disclose names of importers to the public. However, there are a number of private sector media services that are permitted by the privacy statute, 19 CFR 103.31 (d), to collect manifest data at every port of entry. Reporters collect and publish names of importers from vessel manifest data unless an importer/shipper requests confidentiality. Please be aware that there is a subscription charge for this information.Among the companies that prthis information service are the Journal of Commerce's PIERS database and Ealing Market Data Engineering Co.
What is it like being a customs and border protection officer?
Are you referring to the guys/girls in blue? Customs Officers. Or the guys/girls in Green? Border Patrol Agents.I've never been a customs officer so I only have what I've seen when I've worked at a port alongside them. Customs officers are employed at all international ports of entry - land, air and sea. They inspect commercial cargo and travelers. They become experts at inspecting fraudulent documents and cargo for anomalies. They are EXTREMELY overworked, often surpassing their annual overtime cap (100+ hours every two weeks regularly). Lots of looking at documents, inspecting cargo, standing or sitting for long periods of time.Border Patrol Agents are very different. They are expected to work with a lot less oversight and fewer resources at their disposal. They primarily operate in the territory between ports on the southern and northern borders. They do operate a handful of checkpoints and conduct traffic operations. You will see some beautiful landscape, some really sad people, some really evil people and some people that really don't careu2026theyu2019ll try again tomorrow.Lots of hiking, off-roading, sitting in the dark, lots of driving, lots of political nonsense dictating how the laws are or are not enforced. Both organizations are what I would call para-military, if you were in a branch of the military you will fit in just fine.
Can a CBP (Customs and Border Protection) officer revoke an H1B visa at POE (Point of Entry)?
The CBP does not revoke visas, the Department of State does. However, itu2019s part of a CBP officeru2019s job to find out whether you are the person on the visa, the visa is genuine & valid, and that you have not committed anything that makes you inadmissible into USA. As far as I know there is no procedure requiring the CBP to confirm your employment with the employer, but they are not prohibited from doing so.Employment verification is usually an established process in US companies, handled by their Human Resource department. The CBP is not the only party with potential interest in your employment status, banks and other prospective employers sometimes request this information as well. Itu2019s typically handled through mail correspondence, so it can take days. As such, itu2019s impractical for the CBP to verify employment, unless they are really suspicious of you, and theyu2019re willing to detain you for days while getting everything checked. Yes, they can detain you for days without a formal charge.
